Amazing FTOE Wine and Cheese!

FTOE’s Wine and Cheese fund-raising event held on World Fair Trade Day (May 11) at the Cube Gallery was inspirational and a whole lot of fun!  We heard the incredible story behind the founding of Ottawa-based La Siembra/ Camino and how the cocoa cooperatives that source the cocoa for Camino’s famed chocolate operate.  We were then treated to a rousing speech by Ottawa Centre M.P. Paul Dewar who reminded us of other successful campaigns, including the movement to end Apartheid in South Africa, and that we should never lose heart with our work making Fair Trade mainstream.  Paul also spoke about conflict minerals that end up in our cell phones and his recently introduced Bill to sever the supply chain that supports violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Participants were treated to local and Fair Trade beverages and scrumptious treats and bid on fabulous Fair Trade-local-organic silent auction items.  Heartfelt thanks to all our sponsors, listed on our website, along with the wonderful volunteers who made the event a tremendous success!

Spread the Love and Good Vibes in the Karma Campaign!

Join the Karma campaign which kicked off during Fair Trade Fortnight on May 1, and runs until the end of the year!  Do something nice in the world (volunteer in your community, hold the door for someone, buy Fair Trade products) and create good karma for yourself!  Find FTOE volunteers dressed in Banana Suits and Karma T-shirts spreading the good cheer in Ottawa Farmers’ Markets, the Great Glebe Garage Sale on May 25, Environment Canada’s Environmental Fair on June 6, at Westfest June on 8 and 9, and at many more community events!

Volunteers of the Year are Departing!

FTOE Volunteers of the Year Awards recipients Mélissa Dubé and Michael Creighton are taking breaks from FTOE to pursue exciting work in Bolivia and Ghana, respectively.  We will miss their tremendous work and dedication in the areas of social media and municipal outreach along with their sunny dispositions.  All the best and we look forward to having you back in Ottawa!
